Renegades recruit smooya for EPL Season 9

Renegades have added Owen "smooya" Butterfield to their CS:GO roster as a stand-in for the upcoming ESL Pro League Season 9.

According to a Renegades blog post, smooya is on loan from BIG clan and will be stepping in for Sean "Gratisfaction" Kaiwai, who has run into visa issues.

Renegades' stock has risen as of late, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2019 IEM Katowice Major as well as finishing second at the StarSeries Season 7 tournament, falling to tournament winners Natus Vincere in the semis.

Dexerto's Jarek "DeKay" Lewis previously reported that smooya was in talks with Team SoloMid, which reportedly fell apart.

ESL debut brand refresh

ESL today debuted changes to ESL Pro League CS:GO, including a brand refresh and confirmation of a new LAN group stage format previously announced.

Prior to announcing the LAN group stage format, the ESL Pro League utilized a league system with an on-going, week-to-week online league. According to ESL, the introduction of LAN group stages will "not only make every moment matter to make it to the season final, but it will also reduce teams’ time commitment in the league, allowing them to take more breaks in the busy calendar."

ESL Pro League Season 9 is set to kick off on April 12.
